Four Songs to Help You Write Better

Barcelona Door by Michael Perman

Sometimes writers get stuck (oh,never me or you), and there are all sorts of tools and technique to get your mind back in the groove. Have you ever tried music as a tool to make your fingers groove with the jam on your laptop keyboard? Here’s four of my favorite writing songs that make my fingers tap the best words. Please share your favorite writing music as well.

Song #1: Got To Give It Up by Marvin Gaye

Play this song and your fingers will automatically dance on the keyboard. You might first make nonsensical words and then eventually open up your mind to joy, social connection, some nostalgia and an urban sensibility. It’s a story about being shy at parties and the wish for an invitation or a moment to join in. Write about friendships, social complexity, parties, imbibing, joy and love. Keep on dan….cing….you got to give it up!

Song #2: Come Away With Me: Norah Jones

There are many reasons why this song won so many Grammy’s — remember the photo of a stunned Norah holding half a dozen statues? This song is about whistfull imagination, escape to nirvana and having a peaceful feeling in the midst of all our turbulence and chaos. We all want to come away with Norah, or who she symbolizes in your life, or even just a place. Write with deep emotion…
